New Delhi, May 23, 2025: In a compelling call to action, Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, today invited global and domestic investors to explore the unprecedented growth potential of Northeast India.

Speaking at the Riding Northeast Investor Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Sonowal emphasised that a “New Bharat is dawning with a resurgent Northeast at its heart.”

Addressing the summit’s thematic discussion topic “Unlocking Capital for NE Infrastructure,” he highlighted the transformation of the Northeast Region (NER) over the last decade, attributing this resurgence to the sustained leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Under the visionary leadership of Modiji, the Northeast has undergone an era-defining transformation. What was once perceived as remote and isolated is now rapidly becoming India’s gateway to Southeast Asia,” Sonowal said. “The region is not just a part of India’s growth story—it is now a major chapter in it.”

Sonowal pointed to a landmark figure that more than 700 visits by Cabinet Ministers to the Northeast in the past decade, as proof of the government’s sustained focus on the region’s development. He stressed the government’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure, particularly in maritime and inland waterways, which are reshaping the economic landscape of the region.

“Inland waterways are one of the most promising frontiers of development for the Northeast,” Sonowal said. “We now have more than 20 notified National Waterways in the region.

The Jalvahak scheme is being promoted to catalyse multi-modal connectivity, create logistics hubs, and boost cargo movement. Infra development along these waterways will unlock new corridors of economic activity and generate large-scale employment.”

Highlighting India’s logistics advantage, the Union Minister noted that 90% of the country’s trade by volume and 70% by value moves through shipping. With Inland Waterways under the IBPR (Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route) and Sittwe Port in Myanmar will act as an emerging game changer in unfolding transformative transportation, unlocking value.

In a nod to the region’s rich talent pool, Sonowal detailed new initiatives in maritime skill development targeting youth from the Northeast, preparing them for careers in port operations, vessel management, and logistics. He also emphasised the immense potential for “Heal in India” medical tourism in the NER, leveraging the region’s natural serenity, wellness traditions, and rising healthcare infrastructure.

“The market potential of the Northeast is not limited to domestic consumption,” Sonowal said. “It connects directly with ASEAN and BBIN nations, offering investors unparalleled access to over 600 million consumers in neighbouring economies.”
The summit witnessed participation from major domestic and international investors, development agencies, and policy leaders. Sonowal’s address served as a clarion call to align investments with the government’s infrastructure thrust, particularly in sectors such as waterways, logistics, tourism, wellness and healthcare.

When will the Navi Mumbai International Airport be operational?

India is on the cusp of a major aviation transformation with numerous airport projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting regional development. The introduction of new airports in India underpins the government’s efforts to support air travel demand, promote trade, and stimulate tourism. These projects will also lead to job creation and infrastructure growth in surrounding areas. Let’s explore some of the significant upcoming airports in India that are set to redefine the nation’s travel dynamics.

Jewar Airport, Noida

Jewar Airport in Uttar Pradesh is envisioned to become India’s largest airport. The first phase, costing ₹29,650 crores, is set to be operational soon. With six runways planned, this airport will ease the passenger load on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, ensuring smoother operations for both domestic and international flights.

Navi Mumbai International Airport, Maharashtra

Located in Panvel, this massive project aims to handle 90 million passengers annually. Scheduled for completion in 2025, the airport will decongest Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Its strategic location will significantly enhance connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Purandar Airport, Pune

Officially known as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje International Airport, Purandar Airport will address capacity issues at Pune’s existing Lohegaon Airport. Located 40 km from Pune, this new airport in India will function as a passenger and cargo hub. The ₹6,000-crore project is expected to be operational by 2027-28.

Bhogapuram International Airport, Andhra Pradesh

This Greenfield airport near Visakhapatnam will cater to both domestic and international travellers. Apart from passenger services, it will boost cargo operations, stimulating economic growth in North Andhra Pradesh.
Dhalbhumgarh Airport, Jamshedpur

A revival project of a World War II airfield, Dhalbhumgarh Airport will serve Jharkhand's industrial city, Jamshedpur. With a projected cost of ₹300 crores, this domestic airport is expected to spur regional connectivity and development.

Parandur Greenfield Airport, Chennai

To complement Chennai’s existing airport, the Parandur Greenfield Airport will begin its first phase in 2028. Featuring a single runway initially, the airport will later expand to accommodate increased traffic and cargo demands.

Kalyani Airport, Kolkata

Located 45 km from Kolkata, this airport will alleviate the load on the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. With a capacity to handle 8.5 million passengers annually, this project is expected to be operational by 2030.

The final word

The introduction of new airports in India will not only address growing air travel demands but also pave the way for economic growth. These upcoming airports in India will boost regional connectivity, attract investments, and enhance real estate development in surrounding areas. They mark a significant step toward a more connected and prosperous India.
